Prismacolor pencils on brown card
When I saw that Bec Winnel was doing a live art tutorial I knew I had to watch it. Her work is not only beautiful but it is incredibly realistic. (I’m usually drawn to any art that combines both beauty and technical skill). She posts a lot of framed work on Instagram and it kind of reminds me of the mirror on Snow White because the faces look like 3D faces trapped behind glass.
On Wednesday Bec held a Google+ event, unfortunately I couldn’t see it live due to time zones but I did manage to watch it back on Youtube on Thursday. Which I suppose was better because I could pause it and go at my own pace. Anyway this is how mine turned out, I used a different reference image to Bec – hence the blue iris. But overall I’m really happy with how it turned out!
And I did actually learn something by watching. About half way through drawing mine I thought ‘hmmm this isn’t really going anywhere, it’s not looking very realistic’ but I patiently kept on adding more details and gradually it turned into a beautiful eye. I have so much respect for Bec for being able to draw whole faces to a realistic standard. Just drawing one eye took me forever.

Holy crap, that's amazing!
It turned out so gorgeous! You did an amazing job. Really, I love it! I watched her stream live and then went through my favorite parts of the video. I was so excited to watch her and the other artists at work. I would have liked to draw along but I was doing work while watching so I could justify taking the time to watch and not feel irresponsible 😉

I saw this and now I am itching to try to drw this eye too! Thanks for the video! 🙂 Eyes are my favorite body part to draw, so I am excited to see how mine will turn out! You are very talented, Philippa! Also, I was wondering… why do you almost always use brown paper?
Thank you! I use brown paper because… I'm not really sure to be honest. I think it just makes a nice change from using white, and it's good for drawing skin because you can use a white pencil crayon to add highlights, making it more realistic. xxx
I guess you are right 🙂 So do you always use a tan/pinkish pencil on top of the brown paper for the skin (as above) or sometimes you don't even bother coloring the skin since the paper is already brown?
Yep I still use a skin coloured pencil. I'd draw it the same as if I was drawing on white paper. The brown paper just seems to compliment it a bit more I think. 🙂 xxx
